In the lead up to Coachella, I know many of you, like me, are stressing about what to wear!
This will be my first Coachella, however, I am an avid festival goer in Australia in the summer months (which usually hit the same temperatures). Denim shorts are always a great way to go! In the soaring desert day temperatures, denim shorts provide comfort and you can easily pop on some tights under them in the evening when the temperature drops.
Below are some DOs and DON'Ts of denim shorts I feel are necessary when planning an outfit.
DON'T... wear three sizes too small and wear them with uggs. I don't care what Britney does. If we wanted to see trash we would have gone to the trailer park.
DO... pair them with an awesome pair of over the knee socks. (If you are at coachella you can push them down during the day and pull up in the evening when it gets chilly. Don't forget to take a cardigan!)
DO... half tuck a vintage or oversized tee or tank into them. Or even tuck fully depending what look you are going for.
DON'T... wear a midriff unless you have the body for it and/or let your butt crack hang out. This look is reserved for plumbers and not even they should be allowed to get away with it.
DO ... (if you are running low on money) head to your closet vintage store. You can always find a great cheap pair of denim shorts that look just as good, if not better than the ones you will find brand new in the store.
DO ... find a pair that are high waisted and tuck your tshirt into the shorts. The dork look is in, feel free to pair it with some fake (even better if they are real big reading glasses). Or accessorize with a headband.
DO... take a pair of stockings/tights to put under your shorts if you are somewhere (like Coachella) and feel you might get cold in the evening. They don't take up too much room in your bag which is convenient. (As I said before a cardigan at coachella will also be necessary, I always tend to take a small cardigan that fits in my bag or that I can tie to around the strap of my bag if I know it is going to get cold.)
DO ... see what colors work for you. A lot of faded, lighter denims tend to be in right now. But see what suits you best and gage what you feel most comfortable in!
DON'T ... feel the need to tuck or half tuck your top into your shorts. Some people it looks good on. Others, like myself may feel uncomfortable. I don't like (I wish I did) the way my waist area looks in pants so I tend to wear longer tops to cover it up. Don't feel the need to fit in with the trend. Some people can wear things and it works, others can't. I can't wear high waisted skirts b/c I look frumpy. I know friends can't wear certain clothes bc they are too small. The grass is always greener. Point is, If you are uncomfortable in something it will show so change it. The key is to feel comfortable in what you are wearing, own it and you will look effortlessly chic.
I got my denim shorts from Urban Outfitters for $39. A little over my price range (already spent way too much specifically on Coachella clothes and tickets) but unfortunately I was in a rush and had to find something open at 9pm!
See you out there Coachellarers!
